Tonight's CBS News' 60 Minutes examined the case of Gregory Thompson, who has been on Tennessee death row for 22 years. Thompson's is a severely mentally ill man, and his lawyers believe that even while on medication he is insane, and thus barred from execution under the U.S. Supreme Court's 1986 ruling in Ford v. Wainwright. The segment, report by Lara Logan, is, "Mentally Ill Prisoner Could Be Executed."
Of course, the last Supreme Court ruling on the application of Ford v. Wainwright is the ruling earlier this year in Panetti v. Quarterman. Another Texas case, that of Steven Staley, raises issues of forced medication.
The mental illness index is here, where there are many earlier posts dealing with the Panetti and Staley cases.
