Texas carried out its first execution of 2008, tonight in Huntsville. It's the first execution in the nation's most active execution chamber since September 25, 2007, the controversial execution of Michael Richard on the day the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear Baze v. Rees.
An AP report on the execution of Karl Chamberlain is here, via the San Antonio Express-News.
It is the sixth execution in America in 2008, the 1,105th since 1977. Texas has carried out 406 of those executions during that period, more than 36% of all the executions in the nation. According to TDCJ, 12 additional executions are scheduled this year and more are expected to be ordered.
