The Oklahoman yesterday reported, "Clemency bid for Kevin Young brings 30-day execution stay."
Gov. Brad Henry on Tuesday granted a stay of execution for Kevin Young, 43. Young had been scheduled to die by lethal injection July 22. A new execution date has been set for Aug. 21.
The Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board last week recommended clemency for Young, who was convicted of killing Joseph Sutton, 56, at the Charles Steak House in northeast Oklahoma City.
The Pardon and Parole Board has recommended clemency four times in the past five years. Henry has only granted a clemency request once since taking office in 2003.
The governor plans to personally interview both prosecution and defense attorneys in the case, a spokesman said. He also plans to review the clemency recommendation file and related information.
"This is a life and death matter, and a deliberative review process cannot be completed by the scheduled execution date,” Henry said. "I take all clemency recommendations very seriously and will do my best to render a fair and just decision.”
