Texas is scheduled to carry out is first execution of 2009, tonight in Huntsville. It would also be the nation's first execution of the year.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram has this report on Curtis Moore. Texas has by far the most active death chamber in the nation, and the most crowded calendar of scheduled executions. According to TDCJ, an additional 13 execution dates are already set in 2009, and more are expected to be added.
At Capital Defense Weekly, Karl Keys notes an execution date set in Alabama for tomorrow and an Oklahoma execution scheduled on January 22.
Tonight's execution would be the 424th in the state since 1982; the 185th execution in the administration of Governor Rick Perry. It would be the 1,137 post-Furman execution in the nation.
