The Arizona Republic reports, "Arizona clemency-board chief exits." It's by Craig Harris.
Gov. Jan. Brewer’s handpicked chairman and executive director of the Arizona Board of Executive Clemency has abruptly resigned, but the Governor’s Office is offering no public explanation for his departure.
Jesse Hernandez, a Republican campaign operative appointed by Brewer last year, on Friday provided a terse resignation letter that was effective at 5 p.m. that day. He was paid $84,146 a year.
Brewer appointed Hernandez and two other board members last year after forcing out the three people whom they replaced.
The board is charged with deciding on Arizona prison-inmate requests for clemency.
Those forced out said they were dismissed for recommending clemency for certain inmates when Brewer thought they shouldn’t have.
Brian Livingston, one of Brewer’s new appointees with Hernandez, becomes the executive director and chairman in the wake of Hernandez’s departure.
