Today's Atlanta Journal-Constitution has the updated report, "Georgia murderer's execution halted at last minute."
In just the third time out of 24 requests since 1995, the Georgia Pardons and Parole Board on Thursday commuted a death sentence, just hours before the convicted killer was to be executed by lethal injection.
The five-member board commuted admitted murderer Samuel David Crowe's death sentence to life without parole less than 2 1/2 hours before he was scheduled to die Thursday evening for a crime 20 years ago.
Reuters has, "Killer spared from death hours before execution."
The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles made its decision less than three hours before Samuel David Crowe, 47, was to be executed, according to a spokeswoman for the state's prisons.
"After careful and exhaustive consideration of the requests, the board voted to grant clemency. The board voted to commute the sentence to life without parole," the parole board said.
