Jennifer Stayton of KUT-FM news and I discussed the Medellin case for broadcast during All Things Considered. Audio of our conversation is here.
Jose Medellin is set to be executed Tuesday, August 5, 2008, by the state of Texas.
Medellin – who has lived in the United States since he was three – is a Mexican national. Although he confessed to the 1993 rape and murder of two teenagers – Elizabeth Pena and Jennifer Ertram – the World Court ruled that his case should be reviewed. Texas has refused. Steve Hall, Director of the Stand Down Texas Project, says Medellin is one of dozens of Mexicans in US prisons at the center of an international tug of war. The Stand Down Texas Project wants a moratorium and review of the state’s death penalty system.
