Texas is scheduled to carry out its 18th execution of 2008 tonight in Huntsville. It would be the 423rd in the state since 1982. Florida also has a scheduled execution tonight.
AP has this report on the scheduled execution of Eric Cathey, via the Houston Chronicle. The article notes that one Texas execution date this week was withdrawn. A scheduled execution on Thursday remains in place.
Another condemned prisoner, Rogelio Cannady, was set to follow Cathey to the death chamber Wednesday for a 1993 prison killing, but his execution date was withdrawn Monday by state District Judge Ronald Yeager. Cannady's recently appointed appeals lawyer asked for more time to review the case, and the judge agreed.
Yeager set a March hearing to reset the punishment date. Cannady already was serving life sentences for two other murders when he fatally beat his cellmate. A capital murder conviction in that case sent him to death row.
Texas has by far the most active death chamber in the United States accounting for more than 37% of all the executions in America. Texas has carried out more than half of the executions in the America during 2008. If both of tonight's scheduled executions occur they would the 34th and 35th in the nation this year; the 1,133d and 1,134th since 1977.
Capital Defense Weekly lists five scheduled executions in other states during the next four weeks.
Though Texas does not have any scheduled executions during the month of December, nine executions are already scheduled in the state for 2009. TDCJ maintains this list of scheduled executions.
