Writing yesterday's post on Tom Geoghegan, sparked an item for my to-do list. In August I referred to Donna Edwards, a newly elected Member of Congress from the 4th District of Maryland, in this post. Donna was one of the speakers at Net Roots Nation.
Before joining Congress, Donna was executive director of the Arca Foundation which provided startup funding for StandDown in 2000. The foundation has been active in providing grants to a variety of progressive social justice organizations, including Texas Defender Service and Texans for Public Justice, in our state.
Because of her work with grantees, Donna has a rich appreciation of social justice issues across a wide spectrum. She won the Democratic primary last spring for the 4th CD of Maryland, defeating an incumbent. He then resigned, and Donna won the special election to fill the seat. She was sworn in last summer and re-elected in November.
Donna was recently featured on C-SPAN's Q & A program, available here. You can also view her archived speech at Net Roots Nation, here.
Having worked for the U.S. House of Representatives in the 1970's, I believe that Donna has the knowledge, experience, and skills to be a first-class legislator. The residents of Maryland are fortunate to have such a dedicated public servant speaking up for them.
