Jose Briseno

Jose Briseno is scheduled to be executed by Texas on Tuesday, April 7. A clemency petition has been filed on his behalf with the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles.

Supporters of Mr. Briseno are urging people to learn about his case and sign an online petition calling upon the Board of Pardons and Paroles to recommend clemency to Governor Rick Perry.

Mr. Briseno's attorney, Richard Burr, has prepared this video about Jose Briseno and his case.

In a recent string of cases the Board has failed to consider an inmate's rehabilitation, and Jose Briseno's case involves this and other serious issues. The Board has a responsibility to examine this case and take the time it needs to make an informed decision.

The StandDown Texas Project

The StandDown Texas Project was organized in 2000 to advocate a moratorium on executions and a state-sponsored review of Texas' application of the death penalty. To stand down is to go off duty temporarily, especially to review safety procedures.

Steve Hall

Project Director Steve Hall was chief of staff to the Attorney General of Texas from 1983-1991; he was an administrator of the Texas Resource Center from 1993-1995. He has worked for the U.S. Congress and several Texas legislators. Hall is a former journalist.
