Nebraska's Judiciary Committee has also approved LB 306, which would abolish the state's death penalty, however, the bill does not have priority status, and it is unclear whether it will reach the floor.
The state has not had a method to execute death row inmates since February 2008, when its Supreme Court ruled the use of the state's electric chair to be unconstitutional. Nebraska legislators did not address the issue in their 2008 session.
According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Nebraska has 10 prisoners on its death row. The state has executed three since 1976.
