Today's San Antonio Express-News reports, "Feds will not seek death penalty in Texas Syndicate case." It's written by Guillermo Contreras.
The Obama administration has decided not to pursue the death penalty against purported members of the Texas Syndicate charged in a streak of fatal and nonfatal shootings in San Antonio.
Court records show Attorney General Eric Holder directed local federal prosecutors not to seek the death penalty prosecution of 13 members of the prison-based gang whose cases the Justice Department had been considering.
That means the most severe sentence any of the 20 defendants could get is life in federal prison — without parole — if convicted of crimes that include racketeering conspiracy and committing racketeering acts such as drug trafficking and murder.
Some of the 20 have already admitted their roles.
