The chairman of a state Supreme Court task force analyzing the effectiveness of Ohio's capital punishment law says the committee should plan to conclude its work this year.Chairman James Brogan also said he expects two reports from the committee, one from a majority backing recommendations, the other from a minority of members with different views. Brogan is a retired state appeals court judge from Dayton.
The committee continued its work Thursday in Columbus as it heard presentations on ways to measure the effect of race on capital cases.
Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor has convened the task force while making it clear it won't debate whether the state should have the death penalty. The group includes judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys and academic experts.
