The Capital Punishment Enforcement Act, which would allow the state Department of Correction to fall back on using the electric chair in executions if lethal injection chemicals are unavailable, passed in the House by a 68-13 vote.
Electrocution can already be used in Tennessee in some cases. This measure, HB 2476 by state Rep. Dennis Powers, R-Jacksboro, allows the department to petition the governor to use the electric chair if it is unable to obtain the proper chemicals for administering a lethal injection.

The bill’s companion in the Senate, SB 2580 by state Sen. Ken Yager, R-Harriman, passed by a 23-3 vote last Wednesday.
The bill now goes to Gov. Bill Haslam for final consideration.
