The Arizona Supreme Court has lifted the stay it had imposed on the execution of convicted murderer Joseph Wood. Wood had asked the court to review his claims that the execution's drug combination would be cruel and unusual punishment, but the court has declined.
To date, there have been 25 executions in American death penalty states this year; a total of 1,384 post-Furman executions since 1977. Arizona has conducted 36 executions since 1992. The state's last execution was in October 2013.
